An empty seat at the table – why wasn’t I invited to the meeting?

When I first got my job I was invited to every meeting and everyone wanted to hear my opinion. It was actually quite amazing. But, over time it is interesting how things change. Am I doing a good job at work? Yes. Am I necessary at the table? Yes.
Well, my table seat is often empty now. I have stopped getting invited. To meetings, that is. They must have decided, without letting me know. I’m pretty clear as to what the challenges are and how we can or should deal with them. I’m not sure that they do is at this point.

Could it be that I’m too honest? Could it be that they don’t want the higher ups to know that the new system doesn’t work? Could it be that they don’t want people to know that we really are stressed out and there is low moral? Could it be that they made a mistake in selecting some products that really don’t live up to what specs they were sold by? I think so. They don’t want to admit wrong.

In all the talk tapes and research that business junkies do, it seems to talk a lot about being positive, but more importantly being realistic and dealing with the truth. Wouldn’t it help you get to a solution to a real problem faster? Tell the truth, be honest and forthright… even if it’s not popular. In the long run, it will be the best.
