Supervising?

So, today my boss was talking about my future. At least my future at THIS organization. (Any other discussions about my future have absolutely no relevance to my work environment. Plus, I am the master of my own destiny, thank you very much. Letting anyone here determine where I go and what I do would mean forever sitting in a cubicle in the basement of this health hazard of a building.)

Anyway, I digress from the topic at hand.

He actually asked me if I have ever supervised anyone and if I could handle it.

You want to open up that can of worms.

Well, where do I start?

– I am the oldest of 8 children.
– I divided up my paper route around 11 years old and made sure that three younger sisters delivered their portion of the route.

– I served in numerous leadership capacities amongst my church youth groups between 12-18 years old.
– I was a resident assistant in college, supervising a little over 40 girl’s welfare.
– I’ve been a teacher and a substitute teacher.
– I was a trainer at a world class training institution and had to write up reviews for all of the trainees as well as reviews of teachers that I trained. I coached, mentored and evaluated employees.
– I trained up recruiting coordinators and provided them support and feedback.
– I had to train, mentor, provide feedback and evaluate teams of interns.
– I created an infrastructure for managing a volunteer organization and had to constantly mentor, sustain and evaluate those volunteering for that program.

In more recent years, I haven’t officially filled out any person’s evaluation form, but I can tell you that I have provided feedback for over 20 employees evaluations for numerous contractors. Many of the employees never knew that I was part of their review evaluation. On a day to day basis I have met with people and constantly had crucial conversations, provided feedback and personal counseling to co-workers, superiors, and all levels of contractors.

It is so insulting to be asked this question. What it does, however, is tell me the level of person that I’m dealing with, right?

As I write this, I am realizing how absurd it is to put up with this garbage. With all the talents and skills I have, there is no reason to sit here and grovel for the attention of those that don’t see the bigger picture, don’t recognize individual skill sets and hold others back as a result of their own self-esteem issues?
